It’s a rite of passage around here. If you can withstand your first Brazilian Bikini Wax and live to write about — you’re an official Spa Girl. Olga, girl, you’re in! Of course, we were nice enough to put her in the very caring hands of SkinOvations Skin Care in Glendale where we secretly knew she would be just fine. Here’s Olga’s review of her first Brazilian waxing service.
I’m not one for body hair, as a matter of fact I absolutely despise it, so naturally I had always considered getting a Brazilian Wax. I could never force myself to actually book an appointment because I’m a wimp, but when the opportunity arose to try it out I decided to suck it up and be brave.
Terri, owner of SkinOvations is definitely the best person to lead you on your Brazilian journey, so I was super stoked when I found out that she would be my guide.
Terri was helpful right from the start. I sent her an email explaining that I didn’t know what to expect and wasn’t sure how to prep for the treatment. Terri instructed me to grow out my hair to a 1/4 to 1/2 inch long and to exfoliate before the treatment. She also warned me not to drink any caffeine 24 hours before the treatment since it tends to make your nerve endings super sensitive.
Now I had two dilemmas to face – long hair down there and no caffeine. I totally broke the caffeine rule of course (kicking myself for it later), and growing out the hair was a whole new experience for me, since like I mentioned before, I hate body hair. Luckily it was all worth it!
After a couple of weeks of whining about being icky and hairy, I was ready to go in and have Terri rip it all out, honestly I wanted it all ripped out after the first week, but like a good spa girl I waited until it was the right length.
From the minute I entered her studio, located in the charming Arrowhead Salon Boutique, Terri put me at ease. She was super sweet and despite my nervousness I felt comfortable in her care. Terri proceeded to lay a disposable paper sheet on the treatment table, left me a towel for my lap and gave me some baby wipes to freshen up, she then left the room so I could have some privacy. When she returned she gave me the choice of either watching TV or listening to the radio to keep my mind off the treatment – I chose the TV and off we went.
I was dumbfounded at how at easy it was to have a normal conversation while having my hair yanked out by the roots. I have to say that Terri is a master of her craft. We chatted about everything from her family (yes I’m nosy) to the other treatments that she offers. I was amazed at the range of services she was able to offer – everything from facials to microdermabrasion and dermaplaning. Of course out of curiosity I had her explain more about the microderm and dermaplaning procedures. Terri explained that microdermabrasion diminishes sun damage, fine line wrinkles, enlarged pores and coarse textured skin, leaving the skin looking youthful, and dermaplaning removes the outer most layers of dead skin cells leaving the skin immediately smooth, supple and vibrant while removing unwanted hair at the same time – all without the use of chemicals. These treatments sounded amazing, so I was even more shocked when Terri told me that she was willing to offer the dermaplaning treatment for only $45 to first time customers (if they mention AZ Spa Girls of course)!
During the waxing process I noticed that Terri never double dipped in the wax, she used a new stick every time. Despite the studies that germs won’t survive in the hot wax, Terri opts to be super careful and clean, and I thought that was very admirable. The procedure was over before I knew it and I was left smooth and hairless, just the way I like it. I won’t lie and say that the Brazilian is painless — I did have a couple of 40-Year-Old Virgin movie moments — but overall I would say it’s definitely worth doing again.
After all my hair was gone, Terri gave me some soothing cream and a warm cloth and left the room so that I could get dressed. Before I left Terri gave me some Tu’eL blemish cream (in case I got any bumps) to take home, and since I decided to schedule another Brazilian, Terri also gave me some Plum Smooth plum numb cream to take home as well, so that next time I wouldn’t have as many 40-Year-Old Virgin moments.
A few days have passed since I’ve had the Brazilian and I can honestly say that it was well worth it. It’s such a great feeling to know that you don’t need to shave every day and that razor burns are a thing of the past! I hope the world is ready for a new Brazilian junkie.
