First, let me share a little secret. The absolutely best time to visit a resort spa located smack in the heart of the Sonoran desert is during the dog days of summer. Chances are that you will have the place to yourself. And on this scorching day in August, I was lucky enough to find the Spa at Carefree Resort & Villas virtually empty. But be forewarned: the resort’s season kicks off in mid-September so for visitors and locals alike, be sure to make your spa appointments ahead of time during the busy fall and winter seasons.
I arrived for my massage to find an unassuming entrance just across from the main resort entrance. The reception area was stocked with top-quality skincare products, and a tasteful selection of handmade jewelry and athletic and spa apparel. Integrating the cowboy feel of the resort, the spa is subtly decorated in the hues of rich browns, desert greens and accentuated by natural stonework and western art.
I was led to the women’s locker area where I changed into a luxurious terry robe and comfy slippers. The locker area was not huge by any means but I found all the personal items a spa girl could want including a wonderful lavender-scented body mist as well as a shower and steam room.
After a short wait on the plush leather couch in the waiting area, my therapist escorted me to one of the spa’s elegant treatment rooms. For 50 luxurious minutes, I was indulged with a Remineralizing Bliss Massage, which incorporates both a deep therapeutic massage and mini wrap in herbal oils.
The reasonable prices, intimate atmosphere and scenic location of the Spa at Carefree Resort & Villas makes it a great getaway for anyone looking for a few hours of pampering. Spa guests have full use of the fitness center and the private spa pool. After your treatment, kick up your spurs at the Red Horse Saloon just across the street or take in the views by either one of the resort pools.
